How we research and update this site
Sources, methods, and review dates.
Affordable Landlord Insurance publishes guides for people who own rental homes and small rental buildings. This page explains where our numbers come from and how we keep pages current.
Our data sources
- Premium data: NAIC, Dwelling Fire, Homeowners Owner-Occupied, and Homeowners Tenant and Condominium/Cooperative Unit Owner’s Insurance Report: Data for 2023, Table 4 (published 2026). We report the NAIC's dwelling-fire (DW) and HO-3 averages exactly as published and note their limits.
- Housing data: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates (tables B25003, B25077, B25064, B25035, B25024), retrieved via Census Reporter. City pages show renter share, median home value, median gross rent, median year built, and building-size mix.
- Population: U.S. Census Bureau, Vintage 2024 population estimates, used to choose which cities get a full local guide.
- Hazards: FEMA's National Risk Index and NOAA's Storm Events Database, summarized as general state themes rather than property-level ratings.
- Regulators: each state's insurance department, linked on every state page for consumer guides and complaint tools.
How we write
Coverage explanations follow standard dwelling and homeowners policy structures. Individual insurers modify those forms, so we describe how coverage usually works and tell readers to confirm details in their own policy. We do not publish invented statistics. If a reliable public figure is not available for a place, we leave it out.
Which cities get full pages
We publish detailed local guides for the largest communities in each state by population, where Census housing estimates are reliable. Smaller communities are listed on their state page, and we accept quote requests from anywhere in our service-area states.
Updates and corrections
